What Factors Into the Cost of Wisdom Teeth Removal?

The cost of having your wisdom teeth removed will vary, as we create a custom treatment plan tailored to meet the unique needs of every patient. Several factors contribute to the cost of wisdom teeth removal. These factors include:

  • How many wisdom teeth you need removed
  • The overall complexity of your surgery
  • Your choice of anesthesia
  • Your dental insurance

During the examination, our surgeons will create a treatment plan designed specifically for you. Many people undergo IV sedation for wisdom teeth removal, but we will discuss all of your options and help you select the right one for your needs and budget. Before your surgery, you will know exactly what to expect in terms of cost, and our staff members are happy to talk to you about your payment options or help you sign up for financing.

Risks of Leaving Wisdom Teeth Untreated

Having wisdom teeth removed is an investment in your oral health. If left untreated, wisdom teeth may push teeth out of alignment or damage adjacent molars and their roots. Partially impacted wisdom teeth, or those that have partially erupted through the gums, are prone to decay because they easily trap bacteria and are difficult to clean. Infected wisdom teeth may also cause tooth decay of surrounding teeth.

As wisdom teeth fully develop, they become more firmly embedded in the jaw bone. Their growth can make it difficult to fully open or close the jaw. Even if you are not experiencing discomfort due to wisdom teeth now, they can create future problems that may require more costly and extensive treatment. Having third molars removed as soon as possible prevents many oral health problems from having the chance to arise.

Although it’s recommended that wisdom teeth are removed when they begin to develop, which is during the teens or early twenties for most, our oral surgeons can extract wisdom teeth at any age. Many adults beyond the age of 30 or 40 undergo wisdom tooth extraction at Northern Nevada Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.

Wisdom Tooth Removal Procedure

Dr. Galea or Dr. Curtis will walk you through every step of your procedure beforehand so you know what to expect. Prior to your oral surgery, we will have chosen the right anesthesia or sedation for your needs. After we administer the anesthesia and you are comfortable, your surgeon will begin extracting the wisdom teeth.

Wisdom teeth that have erupted through the gums are removed using forceps, similar to a standard tooth extraction. If wisdom teeth are impacted, your surgeon will make a small incision in the gum tissue to access the tooth, then remove it. After all of the wisdom teeth have been removed, we will place dissolvable sutures if necessary and your procedure will be complete.

You can expect to rest in our office after the procedure until the sedation wears off and you are ready to be driven home by your prearranged driver. Our team will provide you with instructions on how to care for your extraction sites, what to expect while healing, and what foods to avoid after wisdom teeth removal. If you have questions at any point throughout your treatment, please give us a call.
